Eating Disorder Recovery and Intuitive Eating

Tell me more about your eating disorder and your recovery process…

I started binging when I was really young.  I don’t remember most of my childhood but can remember hiding food in my room and eating it when know one was watching. Throughout my life, I used foods and various other unhealthy activities as a way of coping with abuse by my father and other family members. It wasn’t until my early thirties that I realized I had a problem and that I needed help. I sought out every form of help I could get; therapy, group therapy, an RD, yoga, meditation. My path to recovery has been long and hard and most of it is accounted here on this blog.

What were the keys in your recovery from Binge Eating Disorder?

Getting help, my yoga practice, blogging and a support system of people that actually care about me and my wellbeing.

Have you lost weight by eating intuitively?

In the beginning of my journey, I actually gained weight. 40lbs, in fact but as you can see in this post: The Intuitive Eating Misconception, I feel that each of those lbs was worth where I am today. Now, as I have become completely in tune with my body, I have started to slowly lose weight but it isn’t my focus anymore. I’m content and feel healthier than I ever have.

How did you get started with intuitive eating?

Ironically, I was doing a google search for my friend’s website and stumbled upon a link to the book intuitive eating. I ordered it and the rest was pretty much history. You can read about the beginning of my journey in this post:

This is me.

You can also check out the intuitive eating tab (at the top of the page) for categorized posts from the beginning.

How do I get started with intuitive eating?

I think the best place to start is by reading the book  Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works

Which books would you recommend to help get me started with intuitive eating?

Besides the book mentioned in the question above, I also recommend all of the books in my aStore.

Are there any online support groups from intuitive eating?

Yes, check out the Through Thick and Thin Forum.

Yoga:

How did you get into yoga?

I started practicing yoga in the winter of 2007 when a friend and I casually mentioned to one another that we wanted to give it a try. I had done a few dvd’s before that but never really thought of yoga as something I wanted to do. I went to my first class at Journey Home Yoga and I was hooked. Read more about my yoga practice here.

What kind of yoga mat do you use?

I use a beinjoy yoga mat along with a gaiam yoga towel, the towel is actually called a travel mat. I like it better the yogitoes or other towels because it is like a sticky mat on one side and a towel on the other so it doesn’t slide around.

How can I get started in yoga?

I would recommend going to a class for at least two months before venturing out on your own. A number of people just do podcasts or videos but those do nothing for really helping you with alignment. Alignment is essential in making sure that you don’t get hurt and only a real live teacher can really make sure you are in the proper alignment for your body. Which yoga books and dvd’s do you recommend?

All of the yoga books and dvd’s that I recommend are in my aStore.

Food and Kitchen

Do you use recipes when you cook?

I don’t really use recipes, per say. I would say I study recipes to gather inspiration for creating my own dishes. Check out my recipes page for some of my creations.

What kind of ice cream maker do you use?

In most cases, homemade ice cream is far superior to any store bought kind so I prefer to make my own. This summer, I went a bit crazy with making it and was often asked this question. I use the Cuisinart ICE-30BC Pure Indulgence 2-Quart Automatic Frozen Yogurt, Sorbet, and Ice Cream Maker and I highly recommend it.

What are you other favorite kitchen must haves?

Check out my aStore to see a lot of the equipment I use in my kitchen.

Technical and Blogging

How long have you been blogging?

My first blog post was written in March of 2007

You seem familiar, is this your only blog?

I have moved my blog a couple of times each time my focus with food/weight changed and finally settled here in the summer of ‘09. I am most well known for my old blog “What I Ate Yesterday” but don’t worry, every post I have ever written was imported into this blog so you can read it all here from the beginning.

For a complete history of my blogging, read this post:

My Blogging Style

What kind of camera do you use?

In December 2009, I upgraded to a Canon Rebel XSi 12.2 MP DSLR and the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens which I am in love with. Until then, I used a Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP and it took awesome photos.

How much time do you spend blogging?

It really depends on the day but between posting, commenting on other blogs, social networking, taking pictures and regular blog maintenance, anywhere from 30 mintues to a few hours a day. But, to me, it is so worth it.

Do you get paid to blog?

Blogging is not my job but I do make a little money (emphasis on little :) ) with ads and affiliate links.  I also recieve free products from time to time. If you have questions about my reviews policy, please check out my disclaimer.

Have More Questions?

I have also answered a number of questions from my ask me anything page on the blog itself. Check out the just ask tab for more answered. And as always, if you have questions or comments, please feel free to contact me or use my ask me anything page.

I just started reading Intuitive Eating after reading on several blogs that it’s a wonderful resource if you’ve ever had issues with your relationship with food. I’m through Chapter 4 right now and am really excited to read it as well as go back through your blog to read about your own experience with the book. Thanks so much for sharing your struggles and your accomplishments! You don’t know what that means to people who are going/have went through something similar.

Thanks for stopping by, Kelly! I hope that you find my blog helpful and please do let me know if you have any questions. It has taken me almost three years to get to where I am today but it has been an amazing process of discovery and I am so much better off because of it.
