Intuitive Eating and Giving Up Dieting for Good
Tell me more about your eating disorder and your recovery process…
I started binging when I was really young. I don’t remember most of my childhood but can remember hiding food in my room and eating it when no one was watching. Throughout my life, I used foods and various other unhealthy activities as a way of coping with childhood and early adulthood trauma. It wasn’t until my early thirties that I realized I had a problem and that I needed help. I sought out every form of help I could get; therapy, group therapy, an RD, yoga, meditation. My path to recovery has been long and hard and most of it is accounted here on this blog.
What were the keys in your recovery from Binge Eating Disorder?
Getting help, my yoga practice, blogging and a support system of people that actually care about me and my wellbeing. I have rounded up all of my “keys” in this post:
Have you lost weight by eating intuitively?
Yes, I have but not without a fight. I did gain in the beginning but I wasn’t being intuitive at the time. I was really working on the reasons I used food for comfort and joy and had to develop new coping skills before I could really eat intuitively.
How did you get started with Intuitive Eating?
Ironically, I was doing a google search for my friend’s website and stumbled upon a link to the book intuitive eating. I ordered it and the rest was pretty much history. You can read about the beginning of my journey in this post:
How do I get started with Intuitive Eating?
I think it honestly depends on where you are now but a good place to start is with the basics which you can learn from the Intuitive Eating CD. If you are looking for one on one support, please see my health and wellness coaching page or contact me to learn more. You can also check out these posts on intuitive eating and emotional eating:

Which books or CD’s would you recommend to help get me started with intuitive eating?
A couple of the important ones for me were:
- Intuitive Eating
The CD, which at this point, I recommend over the book
.
- Women Food and God
by Geneen Roth
- Breaking Free from Emotional Eating
by Geneen Roth
- Eating in the Light of the Moon
by Dr. Anita Johnston (you can read more about by experience with her here. )
- Clearing Emotional Blocks
by Jennifer Polle
For more of the books and CD’s I recommend, check out my amazon store.
Are there any online support groups from intuitive eating?
Yes, check out the Through Thick and Thin Forum.
Food, Recipes and My Kitchen
Do you use recipes when you cook?
I don’t really use recipes, per say. I would say I study recipes to gather inspiration for creating my own dishes. You can see how I feel about sharing recipes here. Check out my recipes page for some of my creations which are also sorted by type if you use the tabs at the top of the page.
What kind of ice cream maker do you use?
I write a lot of ice cream recipes, well, because, who doesn’t love ice cream and in most cases, homemade ice cream is far superior to any store bought kind so I prefer to make my own. Since I publish most of the ice cream recipes here, people always want to know what kind of ice cream maker I use. I use the Cuisinart ICE-30BC Pure Indulgence and I highly recommend it.
What do you eat on a regular basis?
I work to really listen to my bodies signals when it comes to my food choices and that comes down to mostly eating gluten free, dairy free and low in sugar. I do occasionally have small amounts of dairy in chocolate and that kind of thing and I do seem to tolerate goats milk dairy fairly well though I don’t make a habit of it. I have also found through trial and error that I am most able to listen to my body when I keep sugar at a minimum. And when I do have sugar, I try to use agave or stevia
instead of the white stuff.
Technical and Blogging
How long have you been blogging?
My first blog post was written in March of 2007. You can read my first post here:
Or you can access all of my posts on the archives page.
You seem familiar, is this your only blog?
I have moved my blog a couple of times each time my focus with food/weight changed and finally settled here in the summer of ‘09. I am most well known for my old blog “What I Ate Yesterday” but don’t worry, every post I have ever written was imported into this blog so you can read it all here from the beginning.
For a complete history of my blogging, read this post:
Your photos are beautiful, what kind of camera do you use?
In December 2009, I upgraded to a Canon Rebel XSi and with the 50mm f/1.8 II lens
which I am in love with. Until then, I used a Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP
and it took awesome photos. I am still learning but I love taking photos of food. I am even featured on tastespotting and foodgawker regularly!
How much time do you spend blogging?
I spend a number of hours each week writing, photographing recipes, responding to emails and comments as well as engaging in social media. I even recently quit my job to be a full time blogger and health and wellness coach so that I can spend even more time doing what I love.
Do you get paid to blog?
Yes, blogging and coaching are my job. To earn money from the blog itself, I use affiliate links with Amazon.com and LinkShare.com
. I also receive free products from time to time. If you have questions about my reviews policy, please check out my disclaimer.
What else do you do besides blog and coach?
In addition to this blog and my health and wellness coaching business, I also make handmade jewelry and write a yoga blog!
