I was planning to have something completely different for breakfast today but ended up sticking with the oat bran.

Yesterday, my experiment with adding in fat went so well, I wanted to give it another go. But, to keep you from getting completely bored with my oat bran concoctions, I did switch up the ingredients just a bit.

012

Today’s mix included:

1/2 roasted sweet potato, mashed with skin on

1/4 cup gluten free oat bran

1 cup unsweetened vanilla rice milk

1 tbsp coconut oil

2 drops vanilla stevia

penzy’s cake spice

Once again, it was delicious and super filling. I think I even like the sweet potato better than the pumpkin I had been using. Which, is a good thing since I can’t find canned pumpkin anywhere!

What are your favorite mix ins for oats and oat bran?

A couple of you have asked questions and made comments about food combining and I just wanted to let you all know that I am just beginning to learn about it and am by no means an expert. I can only share what I know and what my experience has been thus far. The purpose of proper food combining is to enhance digestion and for people without digestive issues, food combining is not typically an issue. The basics I have learned so far is to not eat starches with protein like meat, eggs or nuts and that fats and veggies are neutral. Most fruits should only be eaten alone or with veggies but since I don’t eat fruit, that doesn’t really apply.

Without getting too personal, I have very slow digestion so I have been doing many things lately to improve it and food combining is just one of them. I’m really starting to think a lot about how the food we eat impacts our health and am often surprised at what certain changes and tweaks can do. This has been an interesting few weeks food wise and I am excited to keep learning and figure out what works best for me. I will share my results with you but remember that we are all different and what works for me may not work for you.

Sweet potato oatmeal is a favorite around here too! Pumpkin is my all time favorite, but since it made me turn a little yellow…I only do that one as a treat. I am a pumpkin addict! Now I do applesauce! YUM!

Oh man. That is so funny you say that about turning yellow. This past weekend I was at the hair salon and my stylist asked me had I been going to the tanning bed. I wonder if I am starting to look orange and yellow from all the carrots and pumpkin??

What a great breakfast! I’m very simple when it comes to my hot cereal. I just like some peanut butter and a little brown sugar :)

Food combining is so interesting to me but a bit overwhelming! I stopped eating fruit because I felt like it was bothering me but I miss it. I want to try to add it back slowly but I also don’t want my stomach to start hurting again.

It is a never ending battle!

It IS overwhelming which is why I am trying to just take it one meal at a time. No one way is right for everyone so figuring out the way that works for us take a lot of work and listening to our bodies. I’m just thankful to have the willingness to do that work. I couldn’t say that a couple of years ago.

Ugh, this looks so delicious! I’ve yet to try a sweet potato mixed in but it’s definitely something that always sounds awesome! Nothing exciting for me here–just nut butter, banana, fruit, granola….

Wow, that combination sounds killer. And it looks pretty too! Right now I’m into adding cold greek yogurt to my hot oats. So delicious.

I like a mashed banana, lotsa cinnamon and nuts. Pumpkin is always super fun too! Food combining is something I’ve never real thought of until now, I hope it works out well for you!

I know that sweet potato wouldn’t technically taste very different from pumpkin, but I’m still so scared to try it in oats!

Thanks for clarifying that bit about food combining. I hope you start to see some positive results from it!

mmm, I’ve tried sweet potato in oats and it really is delicious! My favorite is generally pumpkin- just because I always have the canned stuff on hand. But banana is great too! And always with a big blob of nut butter!
I’ve always been interested in food combining- thanks for sharing.
