One of my favorite things about winter is cozying up with the dear husband, watching tv and sipping hot cocoa. I’ve been making my own cocoa for years and decided it was high time I used agave. I love using agave in sweet things because it has such a clean, sweet taste without setting me up for cravings later. This cocoa was no different and boy, it is so easy to make.

Agave Sweetened Hot Cocoa
Serves 1

1 cup unsweetened, vanilla almond milk, or whichever milk you prefer
1 heaping tsp cocoa powder
1 1/2 tsp agave nectar, more or less depending on your tastes
the teeniest, tiniest dash of salt
your favorite microwave safe mug
In the mug, mix together the cocoa, agave, salt and a couple tablespoons of the milk to form a paste. Once the paste is close to being lump free, stir in the additional milk. Heat in the microwave for about 2 minutes and then stir well. Allow the hot cocoa to cool a bit before enjoying.

What is your favorite wintertime drink?

ooooh, hooray for hot cocoa! i love making mine stovetop with almond milk & brown rice syrup (which you can get in the bulk section at ellwood’s now!) – i’m totally gonna have to give it a whirl with some raw agave nectar now, too. yum!

I’ve never had agave nectar before. Does it have a distinct flavor or taste just sweet? Thanks for your feedback!

Chavonne, I use the light which to me only tastes sweet. It doesn’t really take like anything other than that. Now, if you move into the darker ones, they do impart more of a rich, deeper flavor.
Homemade hot cocoa is so good! I’ve never made it with agave – actually, I’ve never tried agave – but from what I hear, it would be good.
