It was only a few short weeks ago that even the thought of sirsasana (headstand) made me really nervous. But the thing I have learned very quickly about yoga is that it really is a practice and most anyone can do most any pose with practice. And that is exactly what happened with headstand. When I went into class yesterday, I knew that we would be working on inversions at the end and I was a bit nervous. Linda is one of my favorite teachers and I have been practicing with her since I began a couple of years ago. She has been the teacher that guided me to many of my “yoga moments” and is even the teacher that led me into vinyasa, my true yoga love. I love the pace of her classes and they rarely make me feel anger and frustration. They are challenging without being overwhelming and I always leave feeling strong, powerful and like my true inner being is shining through.
Yesterday was no different. In the beginning of the class, we focused on sun salutations and moon salutations. My energy levels were just right, probably the balance between the yin and yang. At some points in the practice, I could literally feel the energy in my fingertips and was sort of taken aback by how powerful it was. It was awesome and I loved every moment of it. Both the dear husband and one my oldest friends was there in the class and I think that boosted the experience for me. As the class progressed, we moved onto to backbends, including camel and wheel, and then came the inversions.
We started with shoulder stand and then moved onto headstand. My husband was in the back of the room and he went up into it like he had been doing it daily for years. I nearly squealed with delight and it seemed to boost my energy even further. Moments later, after seeing him hanging out upside down and with my friend, Jamie, cheering me on with her eyes and smile, I did it too. I only stayed for about a minute but the feeling was amazing. In those moments, every bit of self doubt I have ever harbored were washed away and my self confidence soared. I wanted to email all of my yoga friends and shout it from the rooftops. I did headstand and it made me feel as if anything were possible.
