Balancing Act

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my priorities and the things that are sucking my energy and keeping me from meeting my goals. Being inspired by Tina’s list of goals, I’ve decided to write my own list of goals and take small steps each day at meeting them. As I said before, the dear husband and I are not in the financial position for me to just quit my job to pursue all of my goals. I’ve got to figure a way around committing so much time to my job and living my best life. In order to do that, I need clear and concise objectives in my day to day life. My goals in life are:

  • Focus on quality time with my husband and friends
  • Have more time for self care every.single.day (exercise, down time, long baths, reading, girly things like painted nails/makeup)
  • Become a certified yoga teacher which includes a daily yoga & meditation practice
  • Earn a decent living by writing about food and disordered eating recovery
  • Earn “play money” by making and selling jewelry
  • Have more time for preparing meals and creating recipes

And this is the list of things I am doing instead:

  • Commuting/working my “real” job – between commute time, work time and overtime about 55 hours a week
  • reading blogs/commenting on blogs – I am subscribed to over 100 blogs some of which post three times per day, I comment on most of them. I spend a stupid amount of time each day dedicated to this.
  • Facebook and message boards – I get easily sucked in and end up spending way more time than I should
  • Watching TV – And just as I read too many blogs, I also watch a stupid amount of tv which leads to me falling asleep on the couch every day

I’ve let the things I am doing instead list get in the way of doing the things I really want to do. I can’t stop working but I can stop the madness with my online and television habits. Sadly, I don’t even really know where to begin. I’m starting therapy again today because I have to figure out why I am holding myself back from meeting my goals. I’m the only one getting in the way and I am the only one that can change it.

Do you lead a balanced life? Are you living your dream or at least working towards them?

I have problems with time management – that is what I need work on most! Especially with going back to school now. I know that is/needs to be my top priority, but then something else has to give. Unfortunately, it’s been sleep lately. :-(

I think writing out your goals is a great first step. And who knows…those could even change in the next few years! It’s very difficult to make a big change, but usually when it’s towards a goal, it’s a whole lot easier to handle.

I so feel you on this post! Just like I was writing about yesterday, sometimes I think we need to take a break from all this technology and focus on our lives outside of computer/tv land… esp if it means we are taking valuable time away from ourselves and our loved ones. I love your list of goals, they sound amazing and I know in the long run you will find the right path to lead you to them all :) Everything is a learning experience, and we may not always get where we want to be on a direct route… but remember that there is always a reason for that path, even if you may not see it now. Have a wonderful day!

I do procrastinate an awful lot. But I’m trying to do what I love for a living (photography) and I am taking care of myself.

There are more things I want to do but you know… one step at a time.

I think writing a goal list is a good first step. Just try changing one thing at a time, slowly. You’ll get there. :)

Balance is something I work on each and every day. I became very aware of living a balanced life in my last job. I was living where I worked and it was very easy to get sucked into work related tasks and not have any time for me or anyone else. Thankfully I no longer work there but trying to find a balance of everything I want to do in my life has continued to be important to me.

I think I am living my dreams in some ways. There is still more I want to do but I am doing things each day to move me in the direction I want to go.

Great goals! I’m moving toward my dreams as well, however, DH and I are very comfortable living on both of our incomes, so it’d be a drastic change for me to up and quit my job, too. I, like you, am looking so that balanace.

Ugh, I’m the same way with some things, too. Especially the tv! I honestly just have trouble falling asleep without anything on, so I fall asleep on the couch and then move to bed, trying not to wake up too much in the process. Ridiculous, right?

Good for you for putting your list together. I need to work on mine.

Truly blogs are my biggest issue, I want to read and comment, but then I think is that really what I should be doing with my time. Yet I have learned so much and met wonderful people in real life from it!
